Hand Carved Wooden Birds

Fionna's work station where she makes her hand-carved wooden birds

Artist Fionna Bottema’s hand-carved wooden birds are a labor of love that blends art, nature, and sustainability. Each bird is a unique piece, meticulously crafted from reclaimed materials, telling a story of its own. She tries to leave some natural parts of the original piece of wood in each bird lending to its origins.

Reclaimed Wood and Driftwood

The process begins with the collection of driftwood from various coastal regions. Fionna explores the shores of the northern islands of the Netherlands, the sunny beaches of Spain, and the coastlines of England. This driftwood serves as natural perches for her birds, creating a harmonious blend of art and nature.

In addition to driftwood, Fionna gathers reclaimed wood to carve into the shapes of various European bird breeds. This reclaimed wood, weathered by time and use, provides a perfect medium for her detailed and expressive carvings.

Crafting the Birds

Once the reclaimed wood is gathered, Fionna carves it into the shapes of different breeds of birds, inspired by her extensive birdwatching experience. Each bird is sculpted to capture the essence and unique characteristics of its real-life counterpart, reflecting their natural beauty and distinct features.

Adding Color and Character

To enhance the natural, weathered look of the birds, Fionna uses a wash paint technique. This method gives the wood a faded yet colorful appearance, allowing the colors to blend with those found in nature.

The result is a piece that looks both aged and lively, embodying a true artistic expression of the birds.

Reclaimed Materials

The beaks, eyes and feet of the birds are crafted from old nails and screws, adding a rustic charm and reinforcing the theme of reclamation. These elements not only provide structural integrity but also contribute to the whimsical and organic feel of each piece. Each bird is then mounted on a piece of driftwood, ensuring a sturdy and environmentally friendly perch that simulates a natural setting.

Fionna Bottema’s dedication to capturing a variety of bird breeds through her craftsmanship, brings a touch of the wild into any setting, making each piece a unique testament to the beauty of reclaimed materials and artistry.
